How to decorate your room in 5 steps

Step 1: Mesure & Draw your room

First, you need to measure your entire room, including length, width, ceiling height, dimensions, and make a sketch of the room.

You can start by finding out the area that you have to work with, take a piece of string and tie it to a pencil/pen and move the string along the edges of the room, mark the pencil with string on the wall.

Then you can take a ruler and measure the length of the room. Now time to draw your measurements on paper (or you can do it on your computer using

Step 2: Functions & goals of the room

Now you have your little plan, think about the activities of the room and list them down. For example: my kids will do their homeworks, eat lunch, family meetings,..

Step 3: Set the style

If you already know the style you want to implement you can skip to the next Step :).

If you don’t know the style yet, let’s find out:

The contemporary style is characterised by clean lines and minimalism. It is often seen in homes with an open floor plan, as this style emphasises a sense of spaciousness. The use of natural materials such as wood and stone are also common in contemporary homes, as they lend a sense of warmth and organic beauty. Furnishings are typically sleek and understated, with a focus on function over form. In terms of color palette, the contemporary style tends to favour neutral tones.

The term "Scandinavian style" is used to describe a range of design and decorating styles that are popular in the Scandinavian countries of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. While there is some variation among these three countries, Scandinavian style is generally characterised by a focus on simplicity, functionality, and natural materials.

Scandinavian style is often associated with a minimalistic aesthetic, as well as a focus on functionality. This can be seen in the popularity of clean, straight lines and simple, uncluttered designs. In addition, Scandinavian style often makes use of natural materials, such as wood and stone, which help to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

If you're looking to incorporate a Scandinavian style into your home, there are a few key things to keep in mind. First, focus on simplicity and functionality. Keep your designs clean and uncluttered, and make sure that each piece serves a purpose. Second, use natural materials wherever possible. Wood and stone are two great choices that will help to create a warm and inviting space. Finally, don't be afraid to experiment with different color schemes. Scandinavian style is often associated with muted, earthy tones, but bright and cheerful colors can also be used to create a beautiful and inviting space.

The Bohemian style can be defined by several characteristics, including a focus on natural materials, a DIY aesthetic, and a relaxed, comfortable feel. Bohemian style is often eclectic, mixing different elements and styles to create a unique look. This style is often associated with artists and creative types, and is often seen as being very relaxed and carefree. Bohemian style homes often have an earthy, natural feel to them, and often incorporate lots of plants and greenery. DIY elements are also common in Bohemian style homes, as are comfortable furnishings that invite you to relax and kick back. If you're looking to create a space with a Bohemian vibe, these are some of the key characteristics to keep in mind.

Farmhouse style is all about comfort and relaxation. The defining characteristics of this style are simple, clean lines and a focus on natural materials. Furniture is often oversized and comfortable, with a rustic or weathered finish. Floors are usually hardwood or stone, and walls are left bare or covered with simple, neutral-toned fabrics. Accessories are kept to a minimum, with a focus on functionality. The overall effect is a warm, inviting space that feels like a home.

French country

French country style is a popular design aesthetic that is often used in homes. This style is characterized by its use of natural materials, muted colors, and rustic details. French country style often includes elements such as exposed beams, stone fireplaces, and wrought iron hardware. This style can be used in both traditional and contemporary homes, and is a popular choice for those who want to create a warm and inviting space.

Coastal chic:
Coastal chic is a term that is used to describe a certain style of decorating that is very popular in coastal areas. This style is defined by its use of light, airy, and breezy elements that make the space feel like it is a part of the outdoors. This style is also defined by its use of natural materials, such as wood, wicker, and sea glass. Coastal chic is a very popular style for beach houses and other coastal properties.

The industrial style is all about raw, exposed materials and a no-frills aesthetic. This style is perfect for lofts and other converted spaces, as it makes the most of the existing architecture. Exposed brick, beams, and pipes are all common features in industrial style interiors. As far as furnishings go, industrial style is all about function over form. Simple, utilitarian pieces are the norm, and there is often an emphasis on vintage and reclaimed items.

Zen is a school of Mahayana Buddhism that originated in China during the Tang dynasty. It is characterized by a focus on meditation and a rejection of ritual and dogma. Zen practitioners believe that enlightenment can be attained through direct, personal experience. Zen is often described as a "way of life" or a "philosophy" rather than a religion.

Zen is often associated with simplicity and minimalism. This is reflected in the way Zen practitioners live their lives and in their art and architecture. Zen emphasizes finding the beauty in everyday objects and experiences. It is believed that by doing this, one can achieve a state of mind known as "wuwei" or "action through inaction".

Zen is a very practical approach to life and its teachings can be applied to any situation. This makes it an attractive philosophy for many people who are looking for a way to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

Step 4: Color scheme

There are a few things to consider when choosing a color scheme for a room. The first is the purpose of the room. If the room is for entertaining guests, then a more subdued color scheme may be appropriate. If the room is for relaxing, then brighter colors may be used. The second thing to consider is the size of the room. Smaller rooms may benefit from a lighter color scheme to make the space appear larger. Finally, the furniture and other accessories in the room should be taken into account. If the room has a lot of dark wood furniture, then a lighter color scheme may be needed to balance out the darkness.

We made a complete article on the color scheme if you want to have a full understanding.

At this point you need to:

  1. Choose a neutral color as a base (Ex: white, cream, grey, light brown)
  2. Choose an accent color

Step 5: Choose your furnitures

5.1 Furniture

When it comes to choosing furniture for your home, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, you'll want to decide on a style that suits your taste. Do you prefer a more traditional look, or something more modern? Once you've decided on a style, you'll need to start thinking about function. What pieces of furniture do you need in order to make your home more comfortable and functional? Once you've identified your needs, you can start shopping around for the perfect pieces.

When it comes to choosing material, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, you'll want to decide on a material that is durable and will last you for years to come. Second, you'll want to choose a material that is easy to care for. Third, you'll want to choose a material that fits your budget. Once you've considered all of these factors, you can start shopping for the perfect furniture for your home.

5.2 Rug

When it comes to choosing the right rug for your home, there are three key elements to keep in mind: size, color, and material.

The size of the rug is important because you want it to be proportional to the room it will be in. If the rug is too small, it will look out of place, but if it's too large, it will overwhelm the space.

For the width, it should be larger than the furniture above it. For example, under a sofa (about10 inches more on each size)

For the length it depends on the space you want to create, the rule is to have at least the 2 legs at the front on the sofa.

The color of the rug can set the tone for the room. A bold color will make a statement, while a more subdued hue will create a calming atmosphere. A good practice is to pick a rug in the same color than your accent color (see step 4)

And finally, the material of the rug will affect both its durability and its appearance. A natural fiber like wool will be soft and luxurious, while a synthetic like nylon will be more budget-friendly and easy to clean.

So when you're shopping for a rug, keep these three elements in mind to find the perfect one for your home.

5.3 Artwork

The style of the artwork is related to the style of the room, for example:

  • Industrial
  • Urban modern

  • Traditional
